Wood effect tiles and marble effect porcelain now account for a large share of what UK tile shops sell, and for good reason: you get the look of oak or Carrara with a surface that does not need sealing, does not mind a wet room and does not scratch when a chair leg drags across it. The catch is that two ranges sitting side by side in a showroom, at the same price, can behave completely differently once they are on the floor.
The differences are all on the technical data sheet, and almost nobody reads it. Below are the five specifications that decide whether a wood effect or marble effect tile looks convincing in your room, and whether it can be laid flat.
Spec 1: the shade variation rating, V1 to V4
Every range carries a shade variation class. The system comes from the American ANSI A137.1 standard and runs V1 to V4, and UK suppliers use it because there is no better shorthand. V1 means a uniform appearance, with minimal difference between pieces from the same run. V2 is slight variation. V3 is moderate: the colours and texture on one tile tell you roughly what to expect on the next, but the degree varies. V4 means substantial variation, with unmistakable differences from piece to piece that only resolve into a coherent look across the whole floor.
For wood effect, V3 or V4 is usually what you want. Real timber varies, so a V1 wood effect tile reads as plastic. For marble effect the opposite is often true: a large-format V1 or V2 marble gives you the calm, continuous stone look, while a V4 marble can end up busy across a whole bathroom floor.
The practical consequence is the same either way. On a V3 or V4 range you must dry-lay from several boxes at once and shuffle the faces before fixing anything. Working box by box produces visible patches, and by the time you can see it the adhesive has gone off.
Spec 2: rectified or pressed edge, and the joint you are allowed
A rectified tile has had its edges mechanically ground after firing to a precise size, so every piece in the box is the same dimension to a tight tolerance. A pressed-edge tile comes out of the mould with a slightly rounded, less exact edge.
Rectified tiles allow a narrower, cleaner joint, which is what makes a marble effect floor read as slabs rather than as a grid. What they do not allow is a hairline joint. BS 5385 sets minimum grout widths: not less than 2mm for wall tiles under 0.1 square metres with no side over 600mm, not less than 3mm for tiles between 0.1 and 1 square metre with no side over 1200mm, and not less than 3mm on floors. A supplier or fitter offering a 1mm joint on a 1200mm plank is working outside the standard, and the joint is doing real work: it absorbs the dimensional tolerance the tile is allowed and gives the floor somewhere to move.
Pressed-edge tiles need the wider joint anyway, because the size variation between pieces has to go somewhere. If you want a tight, minimal look, buy rectified and budget for it.
Spec 3: bow, and why a half-brick offset is the wrong pattern
No pressed ceramic comes out of the kiln perfectly flat. BS EN 14411 defines the permitted deviation and it is tested to EN ISO 10545-2, but the figure is a percentage of the edge length, so a tolerance that is invisible on a 300mm tile becomes obvious on a 1200mm plank. Long-format tiles typically carry a slight crown along their length: high in the middle, low at the ends.
This is why the traditional half-brick offset, so natural for a wood floor, is the wrong pattern for a wood effect tile. At a 50 per cent stagger the high centre of one plank sits against the low end of its neighbour, and you get lippage down the whole length of every joint. The American ANSI A108.02 standard caps the offset at a third of the tile length for any tile with a side over about 380mm, and UK manufacturers’ fixing instructions increasingly say the same. At a third, the joint falls before the crown peaks, and the floor stays flat.
Two other things follow from this. The substrate has to be flat: BS 5385 asks for no more than a 3mm gap under a 2 metre straightedge, and manufacturers of tiles over 600mm often tighten that. And a levelling system, the clips and wedges that hold adjacent tiles level while the adhesive sets, stops being optional on planks. Spec 4: the finish, and the slip class that goes with it
Marble effect porcelain comes polished, matt or honed. Polished looks closest to real marble in a photograph and is the worst choice for a bathroom floor, because a polished glaze loses most of its grip when wet and shows every water mark. Wood effect tiles come matt or structured, with the structured versions carrying a grain texture you can feel.
The rating to ask for depends on the room. The R9 to R13 numbers on the box come from DIN 51130, a ramp test walked in work boots on motor oil, which is a workplace measure. Bathrooms and wet rooms are used barefoot on water, and that is DIN 51097, graded A, B and C. For a bathroom floor look for class B, and class C for a shower or wet room floor. A polished marble effect tile is a good wall tile and a poor bathroom floor. Buy the matt version of the same range for the floor and the polished for the walls, and the room still reads as one material.
Spec 5: how many faces are in the range, and the wear rating
A wood effect or marble effect tile is a printed image, and the printer only has so many different images. A range with six faces will repeat every six tiles, and the eye finds that repeat quickly across a hallway or a kitchen floor. Better ranges run to dozens of faces. Ask the supplier for the number, because it is on the technical sheet and it is the single biggest difference between a convincing floor and one that looks tiled.
For marble effect there is a second version of the same question: book-matching. Some large-format marble ranges are printed as mirrored pairs or fours that form a single symmetrical figure. They are numbered and only work laid in sequence, so check the manufacturer’s layout diagram before a single tile is fixed.
Finally, the abrasion class. Glazed tiles carry a PEI rating from 1 to 5, tested to EN ISO 10545-7, describing how well the glaze stands up to foot traffic. PEI 3 is the sensible minimum for a domestic floor and PEI 4 suits a hallway, kitchen or anywhere with an outside door. It applies to the glaze, not the body, which is why a chip in a glazed wood effect plank shows a pale porcelain body underneath and a chip in a through-body tile barely shows at all.
Where each one works, and where it does not
Wood effect earns its place where real timber would struggle: bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, conservatories and any floor over underfloor heating, where solid wood moves and porcelain does not. It is also the honest answer for a hallway with a dog. Where it works less well is a room where the eye can follow a long uninterrupted run, because the print repeat and the grout lines both become obvious.
Marble effect earns its place anywhere you want the look of stone without sealing, without acid sensitivity and without the cost. Real marble etches when lemon juice or limescale remover touches it. Porcelain does not. In a family bathroom, marble effect porcelain is simply the better material, not the compromise.
Both are heavy, which matters on walls. The 2018 revision of BS 5385-1 replaced the old flat coverage rule with a weight test: if the tiling weighs more than 70 per cent of what the background can carry, it should be solidly bedded. Porcelain at roughly 18kg per square metre on gypsum plaster rated at 20kg crosses that line, which is why heavy porcelain on plaster becomes a backer board job. Frequently asked questions
Are wood effect tiles better than real wood flooring?
In wet rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and over underfloor heating, yes: porcelain does not swell, cup or need refinishing, and it conducts heat better than timber. In a living room or bedroom where moisture is not an issue, solid or engineered wood still feels warmer underfoot and is quieter. The decision is about the room, not the product.
What grout colour should I use with wood effect tiles?
Match the grout to the mid-tone of the plank rather than to its lightest or darkest streak. Matching grout lets the eye read the floor as boards; contrasting grout draws every joint and turns it back into a tiled grid. On a floor, avoid a very light grout, which discolours.
Can wood effect tiles be laid in a herringbone pattern?
Yes, and it suits them, but it raises the wastage and the labour. Herringbone means cuts at both ends of every perimeter run and a setting-out that has to be right from the first tile. Order extra and expect the job to take longer than a straight lay.
Do marble effect tiles need sealing?
No. Glazed and rectified porcelain is effectively non-porous, which is the whole point of choosing it over real marble. The grout is the porous part, so seal the grout if the floor is in a bathroom or a kitchen. Real marble needs sealing and needs it repeated.
How much extra should I order?
Allow around 10 per cent over the measured area for a straight lay and more for a diagonal or herringbone pattern. On a V3 or V4 range, order the whole job in one batch: shade varies between production runs, and a top-up box ordered three weeks later will not match.
